La disinflazione italiana. L'occasione non mancata degli anni Novanta

Abstract

Gli anni Ottanta sono considerati l'occasione mancata dell'Italia. Il paese non riuscì a frenare la crescita del livello dei prezzi, mentre il debito pubblico accelerava in misura notevole rispetto al PIL. Negli anni Novanta il bene prezioso della stabilità monetaria venne raggiunto. L'articolo analizza le ragioni di questo successo. L'azione coordinata delle politiche di bilancio, dei redditi e monetaria, assieme allo stimolo rappresentato dall'ingresso nell'euro, favorirono il processo disinflazionistico. L'applicazione VAR conferma che la politica "forward-looking" della Banca d'Italia negli anni Novanta fu più efficace nel debellare l'inflazione persistente delle misure adottate nel decennio precedente. L'occasione dissipata venne infine colta, con l'ingresso dell'Italia nell'Unione Monetaria Europea.
