Abstract

The aim of this paper is to study the behavior and the dynamics of per capita regional environmental expenditure in Italy in the period 2001-2014. Furthermore, the study suggests an indirect test on the presence of an EKC in the Italian regions through the analysis of the relationship between GDP and environmental expenditure. In Northern-Central regions econometric results, in line with the theory, highlights the presence of an EKC. Probably, in this area the adoption of technologies with less environmental impact decreases pollution and, consequently, environmental expenditure. In Southern regions an inadequate productive structure still requires considerable support in terms of public spending to cope with environmental emergencies.
