Economic and Aesthetic outcomes: The Case of Hirst’s and Büchel’s Vessels

Abstract

In 2017, Palazzo Grassi-Punta della Dogana presented Damien Hirst’sproject on the wreckage of an ancient ship sunken with the collection of CifAmotan in the second century CE. In 2019, during the 58th Biennale Artetitled «May You Live in Interesting Time» curated by Ralph Rugoff, ChristophBüchel installed at Arsenale the wreck of the fishing vessel sunken in2015 with 800 migrants in the Mediterranean sea between the Italian andthe Libyan coasts. Looking at artists’ practices, strategies, aesthetics, thepaper reflects on the role of contemporary art in a world led by commodificationand financialization.
