Abstract

This article examines the growing significance and changing role of school libraries, using the G. Perlasca school library in Rome’s Pietralata neighbourhood as a representative example. Founded in 1999 and subsequently designated as a 'Bibliopoint' within Rome’s public library network, the Pietralata library has grown to serve both the school and the surrounding community. Following a period of decline, its revitalization – led by teachers and local associations – emphasized its key role in a culturally underserved area. Driven by innovative initiatives and supported by both public and private funding, the library’s growth embodies a model of 'culture of proximity' – expanding its physical spaces, digital access, and cultural offerings to better serve the community. It functions as a vital centre for promoting active citizenship, fostering literacy, and reducing socio-economic disparities. The Perlasca library exemplifies how a well-established school library can serve as a dynamic catalyst for the community. Its success demonstrates the transformative power of accessible culture, embodying the idea that 'the library is a place where nothing is bought, and everyone can have access to everything'.
