Digital platforms business model: role, value and data management

Abstract

Digital platforms have reached first place position in information access services everywhere. This article put in evidence their global dimension. The case of Netflix, the most important subscription video on demand (SVOD), is analyzed in deep and its business performance are listed for 2020. The main competitive drive of its activity is due to the data system that collect information about television choices and way of consumption of each subscriber and the possibility to offer them a personalized list of content more closed to their taste and interest. Some information is devoted to the subscription video on demand in Europe where a short number of American companies are dominant in the market for number of subscribers and for revenues. In the article some analyses are also offered of subscription video on demand and traditional television broadcasted (linear) programmes to give some comparative observation of their differences and limits.
