Abstract

This article is focused on the Matera - European Capital of Culture 2019 experiences in promoting a higher participation to culture and heritage according to Farö Convention. One of its main challenges has been «Inhabiting culture». The objectives of Matera ECoC 2019 was not to increase the consumption of culture. «Inhabiting culture» – the concept – means that culture must be understood as a diversified array of options also, and especially, including the participation to the cultural production. How to reduce inequalities in accessing culture and heritage? How to mobilize the highest number of citizens in cultural production? How to enlarge the notion of «Heritage» so as to include in this concept even the people who take care of it? How to enhance also the most inaccessible heritage, like the archives? Is it possible to conceive the tourists like «temporary citizens» who take care of the heritage and of the cities they visit along with «the permanent citizens»?
