Chapter 16. Career Progress and Change, 1981-90

Abstract

The third subperiod (1981-90) represents the mid-career stages of the thirty alumni, covering the age span from their early forties through to the age of fifty or so. According to Schein, this stage is characterized by career stabilization and/or a mid-career crisis. Career stabilization means that one establishes a clear identity in the organization and accepts higher levels of responsibility. At the same time, for many people, this is a period of crisis in which a major reassessment of one's progress is made relative to one's ambitions. Decisions are made to level off, change careers, or forge ahead to higher challenges.
