The Formation and Development of Mid-Sized Firms: What are Mid-Sized Firms?

Abstract

In 1961, while conducting a case study under the topic of "The Modernization of Small and Medium Firms," I noticed a group of firms that were emerging beyond the small and medium sizes. This phenomenon was not limited to just a few industries but could be found in almost all industries in manufacturing and distribution. So, based on a survey and research of forty firms in more than a dozen different industries, I defined as "mid-sized firms" (chuken kigyo) the third group of firms that were no small or medium firms but not yet large firms, identified the characteristics of these firms, and presented a hypothesis that these firms would be established in the industrial society of Japan and would continue to stay and even grow.
