R & D and Technology Policy in Japan

Abstract

In this book, we have so far examined technology development and technology policy both theoretically and historically. We have also analyzed the relationship between technology imports—a principal postwar technology policy—and technology development. Now we turn to the development of high technology, an area in which competition is most severe among industrial countries as it is where their growth industries are. Understanding the contemporary structure of R & D activities is important for formulating the strategic viewpoint in technology policy. In what follows, we shall explore the trends and patterns in business R & D activities and their responses to environmental changes.
