Abstract

This newspaper's staff reporters Chen Yushan and Wu Xiaomin and Xinhua News Agency Reporter He Yunhua report: "It is correct to emphasize socialist consciousness [among employees] and to strengthen their political thought; but on the other hand, socialism requires more reward for more results, and wages must accord with work performed. A wage system that treats diligence and laziness, high-level and low-level specialized knowledge, and professional and amateur skills the same cannot be called socialist." These words were said by Yuan Geng, party secretary of Shekou Industrial District and director of the Management Committee, when he was talking with reporters about the main ideas for wage reform at Shekou [in Shenzhen Special Economic Zone].
