Abstract

ASEAN Eree Trade Area (AFTA) which has been formed in 1992 consists of six countries: Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and tbe Pbilipines. Tbe main goal of AFTA is tbe reduction in tarrifs on all intra ASEAN trade in manufactured and processed agricultural products to less than S% by tbe year 2003. Tbe elimination of those barriers among themselves is meant to create a single economic regime. Following tbe formation of AETA, tbe ASEAN members agreed to form growth triangles such as: IMT-GT, IMS-GT and BIMP-EAGA. These arrangements are basically a form of regional cooperation which involves only parts forces. In tbe case of IMT-GT, would Indonesia (Aceb and North Sumatera) gain benefits from that economic region f How would Northern Sumatera's exports to her partners develop in tbe future? What are tbe economic opportunities of Northern Sumatera in facing its economic zone? This paper aims to elaborate tbe IMT-GT, particularly intra IMT-GT trade, and its impact to Northern Sumatera.
