Abstract

Sepanjang tahun 1991 dunia ditandai oleh peristiwa-peristiwa dramatis dan berlanjutnya proses perubahan mendasar di banyak negara. Fenomena-fenomcna baru dan rumit bermunculan seiring dengan derap pembaruan di mana-mana. Peristiwa besar di bidang ekonomi dan politik silih berganti, seolah tak berpola dan tak berkaitan. Sementara itu, issues baru kian mendesak ke permukaan, sebagai misal: masalah lingkungan, hak asasi manusia, pengaturan keamanan regional, dan eksistensi organisasi-organisasi non-pemerintah (NGOs) yang kian marak. Di lingkungan nasional, suhu politik menghangat menjelang pemilihan umum 1992. Berita-berita mengenai pemogokan buruh, penggusuran, sepak terjang konglomerat, praktek-praktek monopoli, kelesuan pasar modal, dan sebagainya mewamai media massa dalam negeri, yang berbaur dengan issues kontroversial di seputar suksesi, ketcrbukaan, demokratisasi, dan ketimpangan
