The Structure and Behaviour of Demand for Rubber: The Indonesian Case

Abstract

Indonesia merupakan negara penghasil karet alam kedua terbesar di dunia, setelah Malaysia. Sementara Amerika Serikat merupakan pasar terbesar karet alam Indonesia sekaligus importir terbesar dunia. Di sini dianalisa struktur permintaan karet alam Indonesia oleh Amerika Serikat. Pengukuran fungsi permintaan impor Amerika dilakukan denganmenggunakan model double log linear dan menggunakan variabel bebas (a) harga relatif karet alam Indonesia terhadap karet sintetis di AS, (b) harga relatif karet alam Malaysia, (c) jumlah permintaan ban di AS. Periode pengamatan meliputi jangka waktu 1963 sampai dengan 1983. Hasil yang diperoleh menunjukkan elastisitas harganya lebih kecil dari elastisitas silang dari harga dan kedua nilainya di bawah satu, yang menunjukkan karet alam Malaysia merupakan Jiarang pengganti (substitute) yang baik bagi karet alam Indonesia. Hasil lain menunjukkan permintaan karet alam ternyata sangat elastis (karet alam merupakan bahan baku utama untuk industri ban) yang berarti karet alam Indonesia sangat tergantung pada perekonomian AS. Hal ini yang dianggap menjelaskan terjadinya pertambahan peningkatan yang tinggi untuk karet alam pada periode 1963-1968.
