Abstract

Theoretically we know that as price of a certain commodity rises, consumer will reduce their consumption of that commodity (income effect) and or shift to other commodity (substitution effect). This paper examines both effect on rice consumption as its price changes in Indonesia, for period 1967-1982. For such effort the writer developes demand function for rice and slutsky equation. As proxy variables, he uses rice consumption per capita in Indonesia, retail price of rice and com in Jakarta, and per capita disposable income, to match respectively, quantity of rice demanded, prices of rice and corn, and disposable income. In measuring disposable income, he uses several proxies (i.e. per capita disposable income based on current and constant 1973 prices, and per capita disposable income in term of com price)
