Abstract

Competitive model views the outcome of labor market is determined by demand for and supply of labor. Producer maximize profit and demand more labor as long as its value of marginal product exceeds wage rate. On the supply side, individuals are assumed to maximize their utility, that is they allocate their time between work and leisure. Equilibrium exists when the wage rate equals the value of marginal product of iabor as weii as the marginal rate of substitution between income and leisure. Two views about iabor markets in LDCs; especially in urai agriculture, have been noted. The first view considers rural labor market as being uncompetitive and with a rigid exogenous wage which is determined institutionally. Besides institutional wage rates, the iabor markets in rural agriculture are also characterized by sharecropping and other contractual arrangements. Based on the second view, however, a competitive model may be applicable for LDCs labor markets.
