Abstract

This article is concerned with the results of an investigation of the pattern of development of coastal villages in Indonesia. The area of South Sulawesi, the most densely populated province (6 million inhabitants) in Eastern Indo nesia, has been taken as a case study. It is a typical Indonesian coastal province: of 23 districts and municipalities, all but two border upon the sea. The investigation was undertaken following an agreement between the Indonesian. Ministry of Internal Affairs and Hasanuddin University, starting in September 1973 in connection with the development of Marine Sciences in thecurriculum of the university.
