Elastisitas Permintaan untuk Berbagai Barang di Indonesia: Penerapan Metode Frisch

Abstract

The principal aim of this paper is to show that it is possible to obtain a complete elasticity matrix for various consumption demands (41 commodity groups) in Indonesia only by using the, already available data, in particular the published (cross sectional) 1976 Susenas data. The method used was first expounded by Ragnar Frisch (1959), who showed that once we obtained the relevant set of income elasticities, budget shares, and the so-called Frischs parameter, all other direct and cross price elasticities could also be derived. This "trick" considerably reduces the data requiremerit for econometric estimation of demand elasticities, which is a useful trick when we are faced with scarcity of reasonably adequate time series data. The application of the Frisch method to Indonesia yields 'reasonable' estimates of various relevant elasticities of demand.
