Abstract

There are many negative economic consequences which unknowingly become a burden to the economy of the host country. Descrepancies in money wages, for instance, result in an upward trend in the price level in areas where multinational corporations have been established. Whilst the often cited benefit accruing from "trasfer of technology" of en does not materialize, instead the multinational corporations succed in cornering the market of raw materials and their marketing. Futhermore the idealistic hope that the presence of the multinational corporations would alleviate the problem of unemployment usually remain a hope. This can be easily appreciated if one remembers that multinational corporations, which employ capital-intensive method, by definition, can not be expected to encourage the development of labor-intensive industries. Another consequence which until recently escaped the attention of those who weigh the advantages and disadvantages of the establishment of the multinational corporations is what is commonly referred in the jargon to an "external diseconomies". The most glaring example being the pollution of the environment which has wide ranging economic and medical ramifications. All of the above constitute “a burden” that the host country must shoulder.
