On The Institutional Approach Of Gunnar Myrdal

Author

Listed:
  • W.I.M. Poli

Abstract

If one goes through the writings of Gunnar Myrdal on underdeveloped countries, one will find three main themes appearing again and again, i.e. : (1) the gap of material progress between developed and underdeveloped countries has been widening; (2) policies based on conventional development theories cannot narrow this gap; (3) governments of underdeveloped countries should undertake radical reforms in their development efforts if development is to be achieved. These main themes appeared again and culminated in Asian Drama^ and The Challenge of World Poverty. Dissatisfied with the existing development theories, Myrdal constructed his institutional approach, as is put forward in the above mentioned publications.
