Abstract

Consistent cost of living indexes that span a long time period are of obvious importance for economic analysis with respect to a country, like Indonesia, that has experienced both years of rapid inflation and others of relative price stability. Most time series need to be converted to constant prices if they are to be al all useful, but there appears to be no single published index which covers the entire post-independence period. Moreover, it is certainly desirable lo have different indexes for different purposes. The most widely used index at present, the cost of living index for Jakarta, applies to wage earners in one city only and should, if possible, be supplemented by indexes appreciate to other cities and to the rural areas of Indonesia
