Abstract

At the start of 1959, Indonesia was still rebuilding after the damage inflicted by World War II (including the Japanese occupation), and the prolonged revolution which followed her independence in 1945. Her special resource struture suggests a strong potential for economic development and there are other hopeful signs forThe future. However by the end of 1958, there was no clear evidence that either real national income or real per capita income were rising, and appreciable crease of either is the immediate future could not be forecast. Some the pre-conditions that have been widely accepted as necessary for sustained economic growth must first be satisfied. Strong political leadership must emerge and frame more definite economic and social objective before purposeful means can be devised to reach development goals.
