Does agriculture really matter? the case of Korea, 1910-1970

Abstract

El artículo analiza la magnitud del crecimiento del sector agrícola antes de la industrialización en Korea. Presenta un análisis que es contrario al punto de vista general sobre la naturaleza del crecimiento económico en Korea, cual es el de que éste fue muy poco en el sector agrícola antes del despegue industrial. Los datos sugieren más bien que se realizaron grandes inversiones durante la colonización japonesa. Estas inversiones tuvieron altos rendimientos no solo en términos de producción de arroz sino también en términos de construcción de capacidad institucional y creación de infraestructura, el caso koreano no es una anomalía sino un ejemplo algo singular e interesante de desarrollo agrícola que antecede a una rápida expansión industrial.
