Abstract

This article presents the most important results from an exploratory work carried out for the Metropolitan Area of Santiaga de Cali on the variables which have an incidence in poverty. The starting point of the research is an aprioristic classification of households based on lacking criteria. Then alternative classification methodologies are used through two kinds of discriminators: lineal and the logistic ones. From these exercises significant differences were detected in the welfare profiles of the households belonging both to the vulnerable and to the invulnerable groups of the population according to the attribute vectors for a sample of 1923 households. Besides, it was proven that the human capital variables in households account for the greater percentage of inertia of vulnerable groups of the population.
