Hazards within the Quaternary Sediments along the Seti Nadi: A Case Study from Suklagandaki, Tanahu, Nepal

Abstract

The study area is situated in Suklagandaki, Tanahu, Gandaki Province, Nepal. It is geologically part of Quaternary sediments of the Pokhara Valley, where the Pokhara Formation is positioned above the Ghachok Formation. The Seti Nadi traverses across these geological formations. Its discharge increased totaling 50–200 mm, because of heavy rainfall, recorded from August 13 to 17, 2023. This caused an overflow downstream of the confluence of the Seti Nadi and the Saraudi Khola. It descends 15 to 20 meters over a distance of 350 meters, with a watershed area of approximately 825.6 square kilometers. This surge led to sediment failures characterized by block falls and toppling on the Seti Nadi banks. Before the significant event on August 16, 2023, blocks on the left bank collapsed, creating cracks about 3 to 8 meters wide and redirecting the flow eastward. 50-meter section of sediments of the Ghachok Formation subsided by nearly 2 meters, causing the settlement to tilt. Afterwards, these displaced sediments have been gradually moving toward the Seti Nadi. The study evaluated the feasibility of safely blasting the fallen blocks to enlarge the flow channel and enhance the overall safety of the settlement affected by Pulchowk riverbank collapse.
