Abstract

Climatic shocks are increasingly frequent in Switzerland and can have very negative consequences for wine growers and wine producers. Their impacts on harvesting can be readily obtained, but there is still a lack of a model to estimate the potential decline in wine consumption for the affected regions. In this paper, we are able to exploit the treatment effect of a hailstorm in the Neuchâtel – Three Lakes wine region (a natural experiment) in 2013, using the econometric method difference-in-differences (DID) on the performance of Swiss supermarkets.
