Economic complexity and the green transition: integrating energy efficiency and digital technologies for sustainable restructuring

Abstract

Exploring the influential environmental sustainability factors has gained significant recognition from academics in recent years. This study broadens the scope of the argument by presenting new potential factors that contribute to environmental sustainability. Consequently, this study analyzed the impact of economic complexity (ECI), energy efficiency, and digital technology on the ecological footprint (EFPT) of the top 20 polluted economies (T-20) over the period 1990 to 2022. The findings from panel quantile regression indicate that ECI, energy efficiency, and digital technology have a negative and statistically significant impact on the EFPT. The magnitude of this outcome is more pronounced in the higher quantiles. Based on the findings, this study advocates strategy recommendations for enhancing economic complexity, energy efficiency, and digital technology to promote environmental sustainability in T-20 economies.
