Abstract

The price of a flight ticket includes several charges for the use of the airport infrastructure. These charges are aimed to cover airport costs such as airport infrastructure construction costs, airport maintenance costs as well as airport management costs. Since the airport management plays such a relevant role in keeping costs low, it has become an object of hard debate. In the majority of western countries airports are managed individually and it is less common to find big airport nets managed by the same airport authority, as it happens to be in Spain. In fact, it could be said that Spanish airport management system is quite unusual because in Spain Aena Aeropuertos is the unique airport authority and manages all the airports in the country. This article discusses the influence of the airport management on airport fees, the convenience of having small airports and the ways to make these airports economically selfsufficient by reducing airport costs while enhancing the potential for increasing revenue.
