Abstract
The 21st-century technology of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become one of the most transformative technologies of the modern era, impacting the economies, environmental governance, social inclusion and sustainable development practices globally. AI's role in developmental frameworks has ushered in new avenues to tackle global challenges like climate change, poverty, food security, healthcare inequity, education gaps, and resource management. Innovative technological interventions that can achieve a harmonious development between economic growth, social justice and the environment are important for sustainable development, as defined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Achievement of these multi-dimensional goals can be made possible using different Artificial Intelligence technologies covering machine learning, NLP, robotics, big data and predictive modelling. The authors review the use of AI to facilitate SD-related applications and outline how AI can be applied to better developments in agriculture, healthcare, educational, environmental conservation, urban management, energy efficiency, industrial innovation, and other areas. The study explores how AI-driven systems have the potential to enhance the efficiency, optimization of resources, policy development and inclusive development. Meanwhile, ethical questions regarding the use of artificial intelligence emerge, covering aspects like algorithmic bias, asset inequality in relation to the access to digital technology, privacy issues, job losses, the emergence of surveillance capitalism and the technologization of developed countries' and multi-national companies economies. The research is interdisciplinary and analytical connecting with the latest scholarly literature, policy reports and technological case. The study also delves into the connection between AI governance and sustainability frameworks, emphasizing the significance of responsible AI policies, ethical regulations, and inclusive digital infrastructure. The impact of the availability and governance of AI is particularly highlighted for the development countries where AI has been shown to be able to close and widen the socio-economic gaps. The paper proposes the notion that AI can contribute to sustainable development only when technological innovation and progress is associated with values related to humanism, natural ethics and social justice as well as democratic governance. It requires international cooperation, AI policy, public discourse and open and inclusive technology education to ensure that AI can be a positive and equitable force for global development. The project ultimately plans to highlight that AI should not be limited to economic solutions, but also instrumental in enhancing the wellbeing and lives of people and planet.
