Visual Language and Cultural Identity: An Analysis of Traditional and Modern Indian Art

Indian art tradition positions visual language not merely as an aesthetic medium but as a potent carrier of cultural identity. From ancient times to the present, Indian artists have employed symbols, colours, lines, and forms to express societal values, religious beliefs, traditions, and worldviews. This research paper analyses the nature of visual language in traditional and modern Indian art and examines its role in constructing and preserving cultural identity. Traditional styles such as Madhubani, Warli, Pichwai, and Kalamkari safeguard cultural values through collective, symbolic systems, while modern art reinterprets these values within global contexts. The study reveals that visual language embodies both continuity and transformation in Indian culture.
