Abstract

The integration of RES into modern intelligent grids has been one of the most transformative developments in the electrical power sector over the past three decades. Between 1990 and 2016, the focus of power system research shifted from centralized generation toward distributed, automated, and sustainable networks. This paper provides a comprehensive review of renewable energy integration within intelligent grid frameworks, covering key developments, enabling technologies, challenges, and research trends. The review explores solar, wind, and hybrid renewable systems, highlighting control strategies, energy management, and grid communication. It further examines power quality, grid stability, and interoperability issues along with the role of energy storage systems, electric vehicles, and smart buildings. The study concludes by presenting the major challenges and research directions for achieving efficient, resilient, and intelligent energy systems.
