Performance and Efficiency Analysis of WireGuard over EoIP Protocol for IX and IIX Traffic Distribution in Intercity Networks

Abstract

The need for stable and secure intercity connectivity for Internet Exchange (IX) and Indonesia Internet Exchange (IIX) traffic distribution has become a priority for network administrators. Previous research often utilized the PPTP protocol, but it currently faces limitations in terms of security and efficiency. This study proposes the implementation of the WireGuard over EoIP protocol on MikroTik devices to provide a transparent Layer-2 extension over public internet networks. The research methodology involved independent testing of three main Quality of Service (QoS) parameters: throughput, packet loss, and delay. The test results show that the system operates with high stability, achieving 0% packet loss and an average delay of 12.17 ms, which is significantly lower than the L2TP/IPsec protocol (19.99 ms). The use of ChaCha20 cryptography in WireGuard also proved efficient in CPU resource utilization. In conclusion, WireGuard over EoIP is an optimal solution for IX/IIX traffic distribution in intercity networks, offering high performance and robust security.
