Abstract

The growing complexity of healthcare systems, coupled with the increasing risks of fraud and cyberattacks, has heightened the demand for secure and efficient payment solutions. Blockchain technology, with its inherent capabilities of decentralization, immutability, and transparency, offers a transformative approach to securing financial transactions within healthcare payment systems. This review paper examines the integration of advanced blockchain architectures in the context of healthcare payments, evaluating their potential to enhance security, streamline transaction processes, and reduce fraud. We explore various blockchain-based models, such as private, consortium, and hybrid blockchains, and assess their effectiveness in securing patient financial data while maintaining compliance with regulatory frameworks like HIPAA and GDPR. Furthermore, the paper analyzes the use of smart contracts in automating payment processes, ensuring transparency, and reducing administrative costs. We also discuss the challenges faced in adopting blockchain solutions, including scalability, interoperability with legacy systems, and the energy consumption concerns associated with blockchain networks. A critical evaluation of current healthcare blockchain projects is included, alongside a discussion of future research directions, including the role of AI and machine learning in enhancing blockchain-based financial systems. By providing insights into these advanced blockchain models, the paper aims to inform healthcare administrators, financial institutions, and policymakers on the transformative potential of blockchain for securing healthcare financial transactions while fostering an ecosystem of trust and accountability.
