Abstract

This work highlights the importance of the knowledge economy in the long-term economic growth in Mexico. A knowledge economy is that in which knowledge is the major engine of economic growth. It is argued that sustained investment in education, innovation, and information technologies will lead to an increase in the use and creation of knowledge in economic production and it will lead to sustained economic growth in the 32 states of Mexico. Based on this theoretical framework, disaggregated variables that make up three of the four pillars of knowledge economy in Mexico in the period 2000 to 2007 are analyzed: literacy, secondary and higher education, research, telephone, Internet and computers. Thus a knowledge index for each state in the study period is built. Finally, using econometric tools panel models, it is outlined the impact that index of knowledge in conjunction with gross fi xed capital formation have in the accumulation of national and states wealth.
