Abstract
Dehydration is a serious physiological state that has the potential to compromise performance in cognitive and physical tasks, if not detected quickly. We present a non-invasive, saliva hydration detection system called HydroSense that provides real-time hydration monitoring through saliva, using pH and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) sensors. The system detects hydration using saliva, which is readily available and strongly correlated to body fluid balance. The sensors attach to an Arduino Uno microcontroller to process the sensor responses by comparing the values to normative physiological hydration responses and determining hydration levels, classified as either normal, mild, or severe, based on the response from the sensors. The proposed device is a low-cost, portable, and easy-to-use hydration monitoring tool that provides continuous hydration that may be helpful for high hydration risk notifications for athletes, clinicians, and others in remote locations. Overall, HydroSense system potentially provides early detection, assessment and management of hydration without the need for invasive blood samples. Future development could examine the incorporation of AI based prediction models and IoT-based wearables for improving accuracy and remote monitoring.
