The crime of aggression - between the international military tribunal at Nuremberg and the international criminal court

Abstract

The end of the Second World War marked a milestone in the development of international relations. However, it also changed the application of international law. Until the advent of the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg, no senior official had been held accountable for committing an international crime. The Nuremberg Trials represent the beginning of international criminal law but after the completion of the Nazi leaders trials up to present time, no high ranking state official has been held accountable for the crime of aggression. This situation can be changed by the Review Conference of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, held in Kampala in 2010, which introduced article 8 bis that defines the crime of aggression.
