Abstract

When designing strategies at micro, mezzo or macroeconomic level, we rely on estimated trends for global transformations and their impact on different areas. This article provides a short overview of the key global megatrends identified in various prospective studies, and highlights five clusters of expected changes, i.e. technologies, demographics, socio-economic developments, geopolitics and governance, and environment and climate changes. A special section of the paper is dedicated to technological megatrends in agriculture, e.g. sensors, automation, engineering and artificial food, and their potential impact. The conclusions show the importance of revealing the global megatrends and the related challenges and opportunities they may induce for both public policies and business, as well as at the social level.
