Abstract

The transition to a circular economy requires profound transformations in the civil aviationsector, one of the most difficult domains to decarbonise. This article analyses the specific challengesand opportunities associated with integrating circular economy principles into passenger air transport, with a particular focus on the implications for international tourism. It examines the technological, economic, and behavioural barriers that hinder the adoption of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF),aircraft electrification, and the transformation of airport infrastructure. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining a critical review of the relevant literature with a bibliometric analysis of articles published between 2020 and 2024, and indexed in the Web of Science database. The findings highlight key trends in international research on sustainable aviation, showing that, despite strong commitments from authorities and companies, the transition to a circular model remains fragmented and uneven.
