The evolution of foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2016 and the outlook for 2017-2018. Policy trends regarding FDI

Abstract

Both inward and outward FDI flows have been marked by negative developments worldwide in 2016. Most affected were developing economies, while attractiveness of developed economies increased, largely due to a gradual improvement in macroeconomic and financial conditions. The role of developing and transition economies as providers of capital internationally declined significantly in 2016, with the developed countries enhancing their contribution to global outward FDI. The macroeconomic fundamentals are likely to support the return of FDI flows to a positive trend in the years 2017-2018, based on a gradual increase in growth in all major regions of the world and a revival in global trade. At the same time, the improved macroeconomic outlook globally is expected to have a direct positive effect on the ability of multinational enterprises to invest.
