Special Non Ferrous Metals and Rare Earths

Abstract

The article presents the market’s development in 2013 and prospects for 2014. The demand for these metals is growing, especially because they are used in every industry, from automobiles to mobile phones and, especially, in modern and high technologies. The current global demand is of 136.000 tonnes, of which China produces 133.000 tonnes. Generally the markets are dominated by a few suppliers and firstly by China, with a weight of 97% from the global production. The Western countries have become aware of the importance of these metals with the discovery of their use in high technologies. In the present, work is underway to develop new technologies (the British company Metalysis) that hopes to revolutionize the rare metals production with high value by reducing the costs of extraction.
