Abstract

Overall, in 2011, Germany continued its expansion trend started in 2010, maintaining an accelerated growth pace at the level of the entire real economy. The relative slowdown of the economic activity visible during the last quarter of the year, resulting from the deterioration of the global economic climate and the intensified sovereign debt crisis in the Eurozone was balanced by the positive evolution during the first months. Also, the notable economic performance was supported by the solid domestic demand and by the dynamic investment activity. According to the estimates of international experts, the economic outlook for 2012 will be marked by an increased uncertainty related to the financial and tax tensions and by the slowdown of the growth pace in the economies of the Eurozone, which will also temper the “momentum†gained by the German economy. These trends will continue in 2013, determining an economic growth below potential. The present paper aims to analyse the main drivers of economic growth in Germany in 2011 and furthermore to review the relevant international forecasts of economic activity in 2012/2013.
