Abstract

Drawing on data provided by the World Trade Organization (WTO) and other international organizations, this paper analyzes the evolution of world trade in goods and services in 2010, and highlights the prospects for 2011-2012. It outlines the main characteristics of merchandise trade in 2010, and its dynamics in terms of volume and value, both globally and by main geographical regions, as well as the shifts in the world hierarchy of major exporters and importers of goods. From the same perspective is examined the evolution of trade in services in 2010. The final part of the paper reviews the main developments in terms of trade policy, focusing on the following three aspects: (1) the deadlock in the Doha Round of multilateral trade negotiations; (2) the resumption of negotiations on regional trade agreements; and (3) the persistence of low-intensity protectionism.
