Abstract

The article presents the development in 2010 and prospects for 2011. The demand for these metals is growing, mostly because they are used in modern and high technologies. It is possible that the demand to exceed the supply, given that these metals are produced in small quantities, the annual productions being under 25.000 tonnes. The rare metals, also known as strategic or special, are usually obtained as byproducts from the extraction of base metals, so their offer deppending on the demand of base metals. The largest producer of special non ferrous metals and rare earths is China, accounting over 97% of the world total. China has a major role in influencing the prices of these products on the world market. In 2010, China has limited its production and gradually limited its offer to the Western world, to preserv its resources and to keep its prices relatively stable.
