Abstract

The present study investigates the long-term effects of labor informality on the poverty rate in Argentina. The analysis covers the period from 2003 to 2023, with the primary data source being the Permanent Household Survey. The results indicate that labor informality among wage earners primarily affects young people under 25 years old, women, and individuals with fewer years of education. It is also highlighted that informal wage earners are highly likely to remain in that condition over the years and, if they are poor, they have low chances of escaping poverty. Finally, evidence is found of a significant and positive long-term relationship between informality and poverty.
