Sanitary napkin manufacturing units: creating entrepreneurial opportunities for rural females in India

Abstract

This paper focuses on an entrepreneurial solution to a daunting problem of non-usage of sanitary napkins among rural females of developing countries, and the reason behind it. It encompasses an action research to understand if there can be a viable entrepreneurial opportunity amidst the taboo of menstruation. To understand the reason for non-usage of sanitary napkins, the research draws on literature to identify independent variables which are: accessibility, affordability and awareness. A sample of 500 rural females was taken in two days. Data was collected through administered questionnaire and was nominal in nature. Chi-square and pseudo R-square tests were applied to the data and accessibility had a significant loading on the dependent variable. The finding has a significant implication on rural business development through entrepreneurial opportunity recognition.
