Abstract

Six years after the UN Rio Conference on Environment and Development, an effort to give a new boost to its implementation in the field of science was made during the Sixth Session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD6, held in New York in April 1998). This paper recalls the context and content of Agenda 21, the main programme of actions for sustainable development adopted during the Rio Conference, which the CSD is assigned to implement. The CSD guides the progressive implementation of Agenda 21 in all countries and also provides, each year since Rio, an international forum to discuss and promote issues related to sustainable development. Science was on the agenda of CSD6.
