Abstract

This comprehensive paper deals with the important field of control systems engineering. A time delay may be defined as the time interval between the start of the event at one point in a system and its result at another point in the system. Methods for the compensation of time-delayed processes may be broadly divided in to Proportional, Integral and Derivative (PID) based controllers. The purpose of this paper is to extract the essence of the developments in design, choice and tuning of PID controllers, and explain them in a comprehensive way for control and non-control engineers alike. Attention is devoted to classical controllers (PID and different types), and their role in process control, development and use. The paper further provides a framework against which the literature in this field may be reviewed in future research.
