Abstract

Casting simulation is considered to be one of the reliable techniques for prediction of defects. Occurrence of shrinkage porosity is mainly predicted by comparing the values of Criterion Function across geometry of metal casting to the threshold value (value of CF below which defect is likely to occur). However, the threshold value of CF for ASTM A356 is yet to be established. Present work mainly focused on establishment of threshold value for ASTM A356. Benchmark casting by varying pouring temperature and revolution of mould have been cast (using vertical centrifugal casting), and checked for occurrence of shrinkage porosity. Aspect ratio was kept constant, and taken as 0.8. The experimental results were compared with results of casting simulation, and threshold value is computed as 0.20-0.30. The threshold for VCC of aluminium really helps in prediction of shrinkage porosity using casting simulation, and can be embedded with any commercial simulation tool.
