Design optimisation of sub-5 nm Head-Disk Interfaces using a two-degree-of-freedom dynamic contact model with friction

Abstract

The realisation of Tbit/in² areal densities will depend on the successful Head-Disk Interface (HDI) designs that will result in the smallest possible head media spacing. In this study, the effect of HDI roughness on flying/contact dynamics of sub-5 nm HDIs was investigated. Rough surface interfacial and dynamic contact models were used to predict time varying slider motion, from which output responses were generated through regression modelling. Provided that the input disk dynamic microwaviness is low, one could design the interface to have low roughness and area for fully flying or high roughness and area for mild, sustained contact and reduced Bouncing Vibrations (BVs).
