Application of mixed-integer linear programming problems to optimise timetables and classroom arrangements

Abstract

The University of Danang-University of Science and Technology in Vietnam currently manages over 3,000 courses annually for more than 15,000 students. The task of scheduling and allocating classrooms for these courses is particularly challenging, given the limited availability of 127 classrooms across various buildings and the substantial number of 300 lecturers. As a result, many lecturers' teaching schedules are suboptimal. Therefore, this paper proposes a comprehensive mathematical model aimed at optimising timetables and classroom allocations. Furthermore, it suggests the development of an algorithm to solve this optimisation problem, enabling the automatic generation of timetables and classroom allocations using Python.
