Abstract

In recent years, interest in cost of quality (COQ) system is increasing among Indian industries. The implementation of TQM, ISO 9000 and Six Sigma and other quality initiatives emphasises the need for financial measures of performance. This study reports a survey conducted to ascertain the prevalence of COQ, the kind of models that are in use, current estimate of total quality cost and future scope and directions. The analysis showed that COQ implementation in Indian industries is a recent and growing phenomenon. There is a lack of awareness among companies about the use of COQ in other companies at the national level. A number of problem areas along with requirements for training inputs are identified. The direction and scope for future study is suggested which will fulfill the need of industries for quality management.
